Clinical Medicine Program

SUMC is committed to training medical professionals that can meet international standards, offering comprehensive bachelor, master, doctorate and post-doctorate programs in medicine. The Clinical Medicine major has been in the world’s top 1% of ESI (Essential Science Index) for eight years in a row. In 2019, this major has been listed in both the national and provincial plans to develop world-class undergraduate courses.

Accreditted by the Ministry of Education of China, SUMC has opened the Clinical Medicine/MBBS bachelor’s degree program to international students since 2010. Students can choose the program conducted in English or Chinese. The program has been registered with the World Directory of Medical Schools co-developed by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER). The program is for international students who have a general interest in China and have the ambition to become an outstanding international clinician capable of practicing medicine in different countries around the world. SUMC is committed to providing international students with quality medical education experiences that enable them to become competent physicians with solid medical knowledge, adequate clinical skills and professionalism.

The program is five to six years in duration and leads  to a bachelor degree. The program effectively integrates basic medical science with advanced clinical training. Applicants who have successfully completed basic science courses at university level or hold a Bachelor of Science are eligible to apply for waiver of the first year of study and may graduate earlier subject to further review and approval by our Undergraduate Education Office.

The curriculum includes basic courses, theoretical courses, skill training courses, elective courses, clinical courses and clinical internship. In the English-medium program, courses are taught in English by qualified basic science and clinical faculties, with established international textbooks and publications as references for the students.

SUMC adopts a student-centered educational model based on the concept of life-long learning and focused on skills development and attitude cultivation. Through interactive projects, joint case studies, group debates, book discussions and journal clubs, and effective self-study, students at SUMC quickly develop their professional competencies and skills. SUMC students are encouraged to experience clinical practice throughout the entire program. Actual clinical exposure is maximized through elective courses, bedside instruction sessions, health services charity projects, clinical rotations and intensive clinical internships in SUMC-affiliated hospitals. The Simulated Medical Center at SUMC, a state-of-the-art clinical simulation and learning center designed as an actual modern hospital, efficiently facilitates the acquisition of the professional skills and competencies required in clinical practice through the use of sophisticated simulation models, multimedia learning systems and professional standardized patients. The Virtual Case-based Integrated Training System for Clinical Thinking and Clinical Skills course has been recognized by the Ministry of Education as the National First Class Course.

New SUMC Medical Education Center

The new SUMC Medical Education Center located on the main campus has been completed and put into use in 2016, marking a new milestone in the history of SUMC’s development. The new Medical Education Center, designed by Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd, covers an area of approximately 50 thousand square meters and houses modernly equipped classrooms, research laboratories, computing rooms and others. The cutting-edge facilities including Simulated Medical Center and Human Life Science Hall enable our students to learn and develop in a stimulated environment. The new SUMC, life sciences-centered and fully multidisciplinary, is well positioned to lead in medical education reforms in China, join the ranks of top research universities and colleges, and produce competent medical professionals to serve the region, the nation and even the world.

Simulated Medical Center

The Simulated Medical Center, formerly named Clinical Skills Training Center, was established in 2002 as the first of its kind in China. The center has recently undergone a significant expansion and upgrade, and has been relocated to the new Medical Education Center on the main campus in 2016. Designed as an actual modern hospital, the center provides an advanced platform for early clinical practice and a sophisticated clinical skills training and assessment base to our medical students and residents from all levels. The nearly 6,000 square meter center runs on the sophisticated technologies and houses a number of multi-purpose training rooms and a full series of state-of-the-art clinic rooms and simulated facilities including intensive care unit (ICU) and hybrid virtual operating room. In addition to standardized patients, the center is equipped with various high-end simulators and virtual network technologies such as SimMan 3G simulator, the first virtual hybrid operating system imported from Sweden in Asia, automatic delivery simulator, simulated laparoscopy training system, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) model, anaesthetic machine, microscopic operating system and multi-functional operating table. Our clinical training courses are strengthened by an extensive collection of virtual learning resources including those shared by Stanford University and University of Alberta. While designed for use by medical students, the facility is also available for first-aid training to groups within and outside the SUMC community. To learn more about the Clinical Skills Training Center, please visit the website http://med.stu.owvlab.net/virexp/.

Human Life Science Hall

The Human Life Science Hall is an interactive, evolving place of discovery of the human body. There are nine stations with over 600 unique human specimens that demonstrate the embryonic development and each organ system of the human body, while the last station features a most technologically advanced anatomy visualization system – Anatomage Table for anatomy education. The Anatomage Table enables students to learn anatomy in 3D exactly as they would on a fresh cadaver and beyond what any cadaver could offer. In the hall, we would like to walk with you in developing deep respect for human life, art and medicine, and in saluting those who donated their bodies for the meaningful cause of medical education.

International Assessment System

To assess student performance, we use internationally accepted assessment instruments such as Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Teaching Objective Structured Clinical Examination (TOSCE), etc. The average passing rate of our domestic students in China’s National Medical Licensure Examination is over 90%.

Our students are also encouraged to take part in international assessments and exams such as United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The English stream medical students taking part in the USMLE Step 1 have passed with an average passing rate of over 92%, which is close to those of accredited medical schools in the USA

Our international graduates have matched into residency  positions in USA, Thailand and Malaysia..
